STEPHEN P. GEHRES

Stephen P. Gehres passed away peacefully at home on the evening of Sunday, September 22, 2024. Lois, his wife of 53 years, was by his side with the assistance of Hospice. Steve was born on August 13, 1948, to the late Wayne A. and Phyllis J. (Manken) Gehres in Van Wert. Upon graduation from Van Wert High School in 1966, he immediately enlisted in the United States Navy despite being only 17 years of age. His overseas duty was at a Naval Base in Sicily, Italy, where he handled the disarming of World War II mines from the Mediterranean Sea. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he enrolled at The Ohio State University. On August 7, 1971, he married the love of his life, Lois Grabner. After graduating from Ohio State in 1973 with his Bachelor’s degree, Steve next entered Ohio Northern University Petit College of Law where he earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1976. Settling in Van Wert, Steve first served as an Assistant Van Wert County Prosecuting Attorney and opened his private practice office on Washington Street. He became a well-known criminal defense attorney and a successful plaintiffs’ attorney in civil cases. Later in his legal career, he served as an Acting Judge in Van Wert Municipal Court. Most important during those years for Lois and Steve was the raising of their two children, Daniel and Laura. Together they watched hundreds of baseball and basketball games. Steve especially enjoyed his fishing trips with his kids to numerous regional lakes and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Steve had a great love of the ocean and spent many family summer vacations camping up and down the East Coast. Daytime activities included visiting historical sites and museums, spending time on the beach and swimming in the ocean, and facing his inability to back the camper into its assigned space. LEAH ANN FULMER

Leah Ann Fulmer, 65, of Van Wert, died at 7:31 pm on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at Vancrest of Van Wert. She was born on November 26, 1958, to James and Esther (Bair) Swably. Leah enjoyed woodworking, clock repair and working on cars. Until her health declined, Leah was restoring her 1967 Ford Galaxie. She is survived by her mother, Esther Swably of Grover Hill; children, Charles Fulmer of Van Wert, Chrissie Fulmer of Van Wert, and Carie Fulmer of Paris, Illinois; grandchildren, Bethie Ashby of Van Wert, Hayley Hoagland of Van Wert, Nicy Hyland of Paris, Illinois, and Riley Thatcher of Clinton, Tennessee; siblings, Tina Howell of Grover Hill, Jess Swably of Decatur, Indiana, Jerry Mann of New Haven, Indiana, and Lillian Williams of Corunna, Indiana, Hank Lewis of Metz, Indiana and Carolyn McGuirk of Angola, Indiana. Leah was preceded in death by her father, James Swably. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory, Van Wert, with Pastor Sam Weicht, officiating. Janet Pratt, 84, of Van Wert, died at 6:23 pm on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at Ohio Health, Van Wert. She was born September 14, 1940, in Van Wert, to Dale and Viola Dias. She married Dale L. Pratt. Janet retired from Teleflex, in Van Wert, after many years of service. She was a fan of Tom Jones, enjoyed hunting treasures at garage sales, vacationing, and taking girls-only trips with her daughter, Kim, and she always expected Publisher’s Clearing House to come knocking at any moment. Above all else, Janet thrived at being the best mom and grandma she could be. She always made sure her family was moving in the right direction and took great pride in all of their accomplishments. Janet is survived by her children, Kim (Tom) Cadwallader of Van Wert, Jeffrey (Lee Ann) Pratt of Van Wert, and Daniel (Dawn)(Tricia Morgan) Pratt of Cattaraugus, New York; her grandchildren, Jami (Tim) Rumple, Natasha (Travis Baker) Masters, Ottie Masters (Jenny), Ryan (Jaylyn) Pratt, Connor Pratt, Aidan Pratt, Jason (Ashley) Pratt, Courtney (Adam) Fuerst, Kyle Agler, and Travis Coombs; sixteen greatgrandchildren; and a brother, Dale Dias, Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dale; siblings, Shirley Linser, Bill Dias, Carolyn Kochie, Barbara Miller, Raymond McCollum, Phil McCollum, and Howard Dias; and a daughter-in-law, Dawn Pratt. It is with sadness the family of Donna J. Schaadt announces her death on August 25, 2024. She was born to Ralph and Ruth McCleary on January 31, 1933. She graduated from Convoy High School where she was a cheerleader for the basketball team all four years. She married Robert L. Schaadt in 1952.Donna was employed by Phelps Dodge Copper Corp. and later by Bowling Green State University where she worked until her first child was born and then became a full-time mother and homemaker.

Susan D. Tinnel, 66, of Van Wert, Ohio, passed away on Thursday morning, September 19, 2024, at her residence. She was born on August 11, 1958, in Decatur, Indiana to the late Jason D. Straw and Betty J. (Richard) Straw. Susan is survived by her only daughter, Heather A. (Tom) Hitchcock of Celina, two precious grandchildren, Cole Hitchcock and Ellie Hitchcock of Celina; three brothers, Anthony D. (Barb) Straw of Aliso Viejo, CA, Dennis W. (Terri) Straw of Ohio City and Jay D. (Jennifer) Straw of Grand Rapids, Michigan; four sisters, Linda D. (Terry) Stukey of Ohio City, Deb K. Straw of Van Wert, Kathie D. Straw of Ohio City and Karen D. (Doug) Droll of Van Wert. She was an avid reader, and a gardener and loved to crochet and knit. Susan especially loved her nieces and nephews and her great-nieces and nephews. Susan was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Douglas Lloyd Straw. Lois Irene Bolenbaugh, 95, surrounded by her loving family passed away on Wednesday evening, September 11, 2024, at VanCrest of Van Wert. She was born on December 8, 1928, in Convoy, Ohio the daughter of the late Surrell Francis Sidle and Florence Alice (Cooper) Sidle. On October 9, 1948, she married Robert Lawrence Bolenbaugh and he preceded her in death on June 7, 2021. Lois is survived by her four children, Dean F. Bolenbaugh of Berne, Indiana, Carl D. Bolenbaugh of Ohio City, Sue E. Boroff of Van Wert and Jean A. (Todd) Bevington of Ohio City; six grandchildren, Michelle (Richard) Spridgeon, Clint (Ginny) Boroff, Melissa (Justin) Kis, Robert Bolenbaugh, Shelby Bolenbaugh, and Ashley Paige; great-grandchildren, Kelsey (Scott) Walter, Abbi (Chance) VanFleet, Trevor Spridgeon, Gavin Delgado, Lenny Boroff, Kylie Bolenbaugh, Alex Smazenko, Carlee Bolenbaugh, Emma Bolenbaugh, Remi Paige and Body Paige; three great-great-grandchildren, Charlie VanFleet, Wren Spridgeon and Scotty Walter.
