YWCA to offer free self-defense class
VAN WERT — A onenight self-defense class for women and teen girls ages 13 and older is set for Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the YWCA of Van Wert County. The class is free and is tailored for beginners. Learning simple self-defense techniques can increase a person’s situational awareness, as well as boost self-confidence in their ability to handle themselves in a vulnerable situation. Multiple studies have shown that women completing a self-defense course can reduce the risk of assault by 50-60%.

Commissioners approve Stout Ditch cleanup
VAN WERT—The Stout Ditch was constructed in 1962. While landowners were assessed the costs to build the ditch between Dog Creek and Church Road, along Middle Point Wetzel Road, it was never put under maintenance and has since become clogged with muck and debris.
Field reports from Ohio Division of Wildlife officers
Central Ohio – Wildlife District One State Wildlife Officer Maurice Irish, assigned to Delaware County, and State Wildlife Officer Breyer Ehrnfield, assigned at-large in central Ohio, responded to a Turn-In-A-Poacher report of two individuals snagging fish. The officers observed a person snag a muskellunge, and another individual assisted in harvesting the fish. The officers also discovered the suspects used a lure trailed by three treble hooks. Summonses were issued for snagging sport fish and using more than three hooks, and the suspects paid $346 in fines and court costs in Delaware County Municipal Court.
