VAN WERT - After their win over Bluffton last Saturday, Lincolnview head coach Rob Welch previewed his team's tournament matchup with Fort Jennings and predicted if his team could hold down the Musketeers' Jared Horstman to under 15 points, the Lancers had a great shot of winning the contest.
Fast forward to Wednesday's sectional showdown between Fort Jennings and Lincolnview at Van Wert High School, and Welch's prediction proved true - only in the opposite way the Lancer faithful had hoped.
Horstman went off for 19 points in the first half alone, finishing with 23 points in the contest, and the Musketeers took care of business in the sectional matchup by beating Lincolnview, 64-47.
Lincolnview jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the contest after a pair of free throws by Anthony Simpson and a three-point field goal by Jeremy Morris.
Fort Jennings found their offensive legs at that point, quickly stringing together a 7-0 run, with five points by Horstman, and took a 7-5 lead.
A 6-1 Lincolnview spurt, all six points coming from Morris, allowed Lincolnview to recapture the lead at 11-8, but the Musketeers ended the first quarter on a 8-0 run that gave them a 16-11 lead heading into the second stanza. Horstman started and ended that scoring burst for Fort Jennings, and finished with nine points in the first quarter.
"He played great," said Welch of Horstman after the game. "When you're a senior, you're a good player, and you're smart, that's going to happen. He played a great game. We just had no answer."
Horstman then scored six straight points to open the second quarter, putting Fort Jennings up 22-11, and the Lancers couldn't get any closer than nine points before halftime. The Musketeers put up 19 points in the second period, led by ten from Horstman, and led 35-24 at the break.
"We played pretty well," said Fort Jennings head coach John Von Sossan after the game. "We shot the ball pretty well and had it in the right people's hands. Horstman was more than [Lincolnview] could handle; he had a fantastic offensive game."
The Musketeers cruised in the third quarter, putting up 19 points to Lincolnview's seven, and pushed the lead to 54-31 after the conclusion of three quarters of play. Trevor Von Sossan led the Musketeers with seven points in the stanza, while Cody Warnecke and Jeremy Kohli each added four points.
"I just felt Fort Jennings played a great game," said Welch. "They scored, and defensively, we weren't there to stop Horstman. We were working in practice to trap him and we didn't do that. And we didn't hit shots. Offensive rebounds killed us just like they did the first time we played them. That was my biggest worry. We really didn't turn the ball over, but offensive rebounds just killed us. You can't take anything away from Fort Jennings, though. They played a great game."
The fourth quarter was one to forget for Fort Jennings, as the Musketeers played an extremely sloppy eight minutes to close the game. The Musketeers turned the ball over ten times during the quarter, and only scored ten points before the final buzzer.
The Lancers were able to tack on 16 more points in the fourth, thanks to those Musketeer turnovers, but the hole was way too deep to pull out of as Lincolnview fell by the 64-47 final.
"It wasn't just one or two guys in that fourth quarter - it was everybody," said an unhappy Von Sossan after the contest. "We couldn't throw the ball away fast enough. It was just a lack of mental discipline."
With the win, Fort Jennings improves to 10-11 on the season and will now face Delphos St. John's on Friday, March 5, at 6:15 p.m. in the Cougars Den at Van Wert High School.
"Our next opponent is going to be mighty tough," said Von Sossan. "But we're there. We have to get there and then we have to compete. If you compete then who knows what will happen. We're there, so we'll try it and see what happens. But we'll have to play a lot harder than what we did in the fourth quarter, no doubt about it."
Lincolnview ends their season with a 3-18 record overall, but despite the rough campaign, Welch was proud of the way his club competed throughout the year.
"Our kids played hard," said Welch. "I'm proud of them. The kids really worked hard all year. There were a lot of games where we could have just packed it in and quit. But we didn't. Our kids came to work every game and they played hard."
Horstman led all scorers with 23 points on the night and had 13 rebounds, while Von Sossan added 18 points for the Musketeers. Lincolnview was led by Morris with 19 points, and Simpson chipped in 14 points.
