McGUFFEY - The Parkway Panthers stalked the Rams for a full period before attacking. Size, speed, and aggressiveness all played a role in a romp over USV, 62-31, on Monday evening in McGuffey.
The Rams kept pace with Parkway in the opening stanza. Senior Ryan Sparkman canned the first shot, which was quickly answered by Ryan Steinbrunner. Steinbrunner put the ball to the hoop again ten seconds later, but the short-lived lead was taken back by a Brandon Overs' triple. The lead see-sawed back and forth all period, with the Panthers leading 12-11 at the buzzer.
The melee continued in the second, with the Panthers stepping up the pace and keeping the Rams running. A basket by Rhys Rose in the opening seconds was the last time USV would lead in the game. The Panther boys continued to sink baskets and built up a 21-13 lead in two minutes as the Ram shooting went cold.
Sparkman finally scored under the basket, and after an answer by Trevor Wuebker, Sparkman was fed the ball again for two. With three minutes before the half, the Panthers began a streak of steals that turned into points, with Logan Hunter and Corey Decker doing the damage.
Dillon Long earned the final points of the period for Parkway, and then they ate up enough clock to prevent the Rams from scoring.
After the brief intermission, the Panthers held the Rams to five points in the third quarter. Parkway continued to force turnovers and capitalize on them as USV struggled with controlling the ball.
The fourth period was no different, even as more boys came off the Parkway bench. The height of the Panthers was key in blocking most of the shot attempts of the Rams as Parkway cruised to the 62-31 final.
The Parkway jayvees also cruised to a victory, 60-12.
