Parkway drops close game to USV, 57-52

BY VIRGINIA BANDY

McGUFFEY - The Parkway Lady Panthers strolled into McGuffey to face Upper Scioto Valley in a non-league contest on Monday night, and gave the Lady Rams a run for their money. The lead traded hands several times during the final period, but USV pulled away in the final minute of the game to clinch the win, 57-52.

USV improves to 11-6 while Parkway slips to 8-9.

Both teams were coming off of a long hiatus due to weather, and Coach Adrian Jazwiecki said "we had a pretty good handle on things in the first half, but we did have some mental breakdowns."

Becca Harshman struck first by sinking the ball within 30 seconds of the opening whistle. The first period was a see saw battle as each team shook off the rust. Some errant passing in the opening stanza by the Lady Rams kept them from dominating the period, and USV only led by three at the beginning of the second.

Parkway scored in eight seconds of the second period start, when Danielle Matthews canned a jumper. Tara Luth scored moments later to get within one, but Ram senior Katie Hicks nailed a triple to keep the lead.

Things heated up as both teams began stealing the ball from each other, but they rarely resulted in points. Parkway did manage to get a five point lead at the end of the first half, with baskets by Kaelia Crawford and Matthews, and finally Kelsey Bates. A roll around the rim by USV's Mikayla Coburn cut the Panther lead to three at halftime.

Both teams kept it close for the remainder of the contest. Parkway was leading by two at the end of the third, but it was the last time they would hold the edge. USV slowly gained ground on the Panthers, going from a six point lead back down to one, and then canned six free throws in the final minute to secure the win.

Leading the Lady Panthers in scoring was Matthews with 11, and senior Tara Luth followed with nine. USV's Hicks canned 21, while Whitney Carroll earned 16.
