PAULDING - Although the winter winds were howling outside, the gym was hot with a good old-fashioned barn burner on Friday night in Paulding as the Panthers held off Lincolnview in overtime, 49-41.
The game started exactly the same way it ended in regulation - tied. The Lancers came out shooting well but turnovers at bad moments kept them from getting as many shots as Coach Rob Welch would have liked. Meanwhile, Paulding was taking care of the ball but they were as cold as the snowbanks piling up in the parking lot, going three for 11 (27%) from the field in the first quarter. At the end of one, the score was 9-9.
The Panthers heated up before the Lancers in the second quarter. Paulding's Devan Bermejo added to the four-point play he had earned in the first by hitting another shot from beyond the arc. But it was senior Justin Riley who entered the game off the bench who started to light up the scoreboard. He drove into the lane and was fouled as he sunk a 10-footer for an old-fashioned three-point play. He also found ways to dribble through the Lancer press for layups as well.
Lincolnview, on the other hand, was able to get entry passes into the post but nothing was falling for them when they actually got shots. They only put the ball up six times in the eight minutes, making only one. At halftime Paulding appeared to have a comfortable lead at 21-12.
But the third quarter belonged to Lincolnview as they used a full-court zone press to feed energy into their team. The big threat was sophomore Clayton Longstreth as he scored on face-up 12-footers and put backs. He scored eight points in the period to lead Lincolnview back to within three by the end of the quarter, 32-29.
The Lancers finally completed the comeback at the 5:29 mark of the fourth when Anthony Simpson hit a bucket off the left post for a 33-33 tie. After a Paulding free throw, Simpson rolled off a pick underneath on an out-of-bounds play and Lincolnview had their first lead since early in the game.
Lincolnview eventually built up a 39-34 lead with only 1:50 left to go in regulation. But Bermejo again got loose on the perimeter and downed another bomb on an in-bounds pass. Then after another Lincolnview turnover, Riley drove into the lane and went up for a ten-foot jumper that hit nothing but the bottom of the net.
Welch had time to call timeout and set a play for his Lancers but a lot of defensive pressure was put on Lincolnview's Jeremy Morris and his shot bounced off the side of the rim. Paulding threatened to take the ball the length of the court on the long rebound but a palming the ball call sent the teams into the extra time at 39-39.
The overtime looked like it was going to be as close as the rest of the game. Paulding's Grant Harder grabbed an offensive rebound and made the put back for the lead but Longstreth answered with a baseline jumper to knot the game again. Back down the court for the Panthers and this time Harder was fouled on the shot. He calmly made them both and, after a Lincolnview missed shot, it was free throws down the stretch, including four of five from Dylan Welch, to seal the victory.
"(Paulding) made shots today," said Coach Welch after the game. "Bermejo, you know, you don't leave him. He made that big three that got them back into the game. I'm proud of the kids. We scored 12 points in the first half and they dug in and came back. We tried to speed up the game (in the third) with the press. We shot well in the second half. It was just a heck of a game."
Balanced scoring was the name of the game for both teams on the night. Bermejo led Paulding with 11 points while Riley and Welch both added ten. Game-high honors went to Lincolnview's Simpson with 14 markers but right there with him was Longstreth with 12 and Whitaker at ten points.
Paulding recovered from their cold shooting from the field in the first quarter. Unofficially, the Panthers were 17 of 41 for 41 percent for field goals including three if six (50%) from beyond the arc. They were also a steady eight of 12 (67%) from the free throw line for the game.
Lincolnview was 17 for 47 (36%) from the field including an ice cold one for 11 (9%) from three-point land. The Lancers were four of six from the charity stripe on the night.
Paulding won the battle of the boards by a slim margin, 29-24, but most importantly they had 11 offensive rebounds that led to ten points. The turnover battle was a virtual tie with Lincolnview at one more more, 17-16.
Paulding goes to 7-8 overall and 3-2 in the Northwest Conference. Lincolnview falls to 1-15 and 1-5 in league play.
Paulding also won the junior varsity game, 52-24.
