MIDDLE POINT - No matter what you do in the other phases of the game - rebounding, turnovers, defense - if a team does not put the ball in the bucket, it is hard to win. On Thursday night, Lincolnview shot only 26 percent from the field on the way to a NWC loss to Paulding, 50-31.

Both teams struggled in the first quarter. The Panthers were only able to score in transition when they broke through the Lancer half-court press while on the other side of the court, Lincolnview used backdoor cuts and sealed the offside for short jumpers. At the end of one quarter the score was 7-6 in favor of Paulding.

The middle two quarters of the game, however, belonged to Paulding. The second started with the Panther's Shelby Erford getting two steals out front and scoring on runouts. When they were not scoring off of turnovers, Paulding coach Lyndsi Shininger had her team pounding the ball into the paint and sophomore post player Jessica Farr responded.

"Jessica Farr really stepped up for us tonight," said Shininger. "We've been hounding her for weeks and weeks, 'You can be as good as you want to be. There's no one out here on any team that can stop you.' And she has started to look to the basket more, even if she doesn't shoot it."

Farr scored three times in the post in the period on a variety of moves.

For Lincolnview, the lid stayed on the basket. A timeout by Lancer coach Dave Evans at about the midpoint of the quarter led to crisper passes and two quick buckets, but that old bugaboo - turnovers - reared its head again and kept them from taking out much of the gap. At the halftime break, Paulding had extended their lead to 21-12.

The third quarter was the backbreaker for the home team. Lincolnview fought to within six points at one point but Farr got loose on the inside for two more buckets, along with Ashley Myers, and then Erford hit a long three at the buzzer. The Lancers' lone bright spot had been Abbi Alvarez who made two more mid-range jumpers after driving into the lane. A 9-2 run by Paulding at the end of the quarter gave them a 38-20 lead and allowed both teams to get playing time for their benches in the fourth.

"We're playing our best basketball right now," said Paulding's Shininger. "It wasn't our best first quarter, definitely not, but we also had a really emotional game on Tuesday against Fairview and we lost a little bit coming into this game."

After several weeks of playing better basketball every time out with his young team, Lincolnview's Evans was disappointed by what he considered a step back in the Lancers' performance.

"We got right back to our old ways tonight," he said. "I can't fault their effort. They played hard but we just reverted back to throwing the ball around. We missed some easy shots. We had a chance to cut it down to four and set up a play and had a chance to set a tone but we missed the layup."

Unofficially, Paulding was 19 of 42 from the field for 45 percent shooting, including two of five (40%) from beyond the arc. Lincolnview was only 13 of 50 for 26 percent and went zero for four from three-point land. Even their free throw eye was off as they went five of 15 for 33 percent from the charity stripe. Paulding won the turnover battle, 20-22, but Lincolnview came out on top with rebounds, 28-21.

Jessica Farr led Paulding in scoring with 12 points. She was joined in double digits by Shelby Erford with 11. Those points came despite a tremendous defensive effort by the Lancers' Courtney Tunis who was responsible for only one of those points while she was in the game. Lincolnview's top scorer was Abbi Alvarez with eight points.

Paulding goes to 7-9 overall and 3-4 in the Northwest Conference. Lincolnview falls to 2-15 and 1-6.

Lincolnview won the junior varsity contest, 38-17.
