LIMA - The Van Wert High School wrestling team traveled to Lima on Tuesday evening to take on the Bath Wildcats.
The match started with a junior varsity match in the 171 lb. weight class. Bryan Zinsmaster won by pin in 3:04.
The varsity match started at the 103-pound weight class that Van Wert voided to give up six team points to Bath's Jake Bible.
Zack Burk (112) started off the Cougars' scoring by pinning Nic Moralez in 3:37 to even up the team score at 6-6. Sean Dorsch (119) dominated Garrett Renner to earn a 9-1 major decision and bring the team score to 10-6, Van Wert.
Next, Tommy Mault (125) defeated Dillan Foust 1-0 to bring Bath within one point with Van Wert still leading 10-9. Wildcat grappler and state-qualifier Josh Beemer won a 15-4 major decision over Colton Royer (130), putting Bath ahead 13-10.
Josh Calkins of Bath then defeated Vincent Moreland (135) by pinning him with 52 seconds left in the third period. Van Wert now trailed 19-10.
Up next for the Cougars was Jordan Daniels (140), who pinned Justin Campbell in 5:13 to earn six team points and bring Van Wert within three at 19-16.
The 145-pound match pegged Cougar standout Connor Massillo against state-placer Matt Hefner of Bath and it proved to be a very exciting match right to the end. Trailing 3-0 in the third period, Massillo was able to score two points for a reversal and had Hefner on his back to earn three near fall points and win by a score of 5-3.
The Cougar fans were on their feet as the team score was tied at 19-19. Gyer Blackmore (152) kept the winning streak going for another round as he pinned Brandon Contis of Bath in 2:57. That brought the score to Van Wert 25, Bath 19.
The Wildcats' Jeremy Chandler then pinned Jordan Mohr (160) to even the score at 25-25. But Cougar Brad Allmandinger (171( quickly took control of Robbie Ewing, pinning him in just 53 seconds and putting Van Wert back into the lead, 31-25.
Cory Hirschy (189) came up just short against Logan Kiracofe of Bath, who won the 7-6 point match. With Van Wert ahead 31-28, Cougar Steven Kopp (215) fought hard, but got pinned in 2:46 by Bath's Cameron Harmon to put six points on the home side of the scoreboard.
The Cougars' heavyweight Terrin Contreras was still out after an injury at the Dayton Wayne tourney, so Van Wert was forced to void the 285-pound weight class and give up six more team points. The final score was Bath 40, Van Wert 31.
Another jayvee match followed the varsity matches. This time Bryan Zinsmaster was able to pin Logan Kirkendall in only 1:49 to earn his second fall of the night.
The Cougars will be working hard the next week and a half to prepare for their next competition, which is the Western Buckeye League Tournament. It will be held at Lima Bath on Saturday, February 13.
