DELPHOS - Kevin Rogers scored 22 points while Thayne Recker added 18 as the Arlington Red Devils posted a 54-47 win over Delphos Jefferson in non-league boys basketball action Saturday evening at Jefferson Middle School.
Rogers and Recker each grabbed nine rebounds as well as the Red Devils moved to 8-6 on the season. Delphos Jefferson drops to 9-5 with the loss.
The Wildcats simply had no answer for the duo of Rogers (6-7) and Recker (6-4). Arlington outrebounded the Wildcats 29-11 on the evening.
"We knew coming in to the game it would be a problem for us to match up with them," stated Jefferson head coach Marc Smith. "We felt that we had to be able to push the tempo and get it into a transition game and we were never able to do that."
The Red Devils handled the Wildcat press when it was needed and made 21 of 41 shots on the night (51 percent), a combination that Delphos Jefferson couldn't overcome.
"They got it into a half court game and that is not the way we want to play," Smith continued. "Once they established that, they were able to push it inside and they got good looks all night long. Our kids did a pretty good job I thought but we just had no way of matching up with them."
After trailing 25-24 at the intermission, Arlington opened the third quarter with a pair of buckets by Recker to take a 28-25 lead.
Delphos Jefferson then answered with a 10-7 run, ignited by a trey by Mitchell Antalis, to knot the contest at 35-35. A bucket by Logan Bonifas put the Wildcats on top 37-35 before a late trey from Rogers gave Arlington a 38-37 lead entering the final stanza.
The Red Devils then broke the game open from there. Recker started the fourth quarter with seven straight points for Arlington, giving the Red Devils a 45-40 lead with 3:33 left in the contest.
Following a basket by Jordan Jettinghoff, Matt Morehart answered with a trey for the Red Devils to push the lead to 48-42.
"We battled all night long and we still were in position to get a win at the end," Smith stated. "They hit their free throws down the stretch and made the plays."
Rogers finished the game making six straight free throws in the final 18 seconds to seal the Arlington victory.
"We have to bounce back from this and come back ready to go," Smith concluded. "The kids played hard and did all they could do tonight. It was a game that we didn't get into the pace we wanted and that proved to be the difference."
Morehart chipped in a dozen points for the Red Devils. Craig Carder scored 17 markers for Jefferson with Ryan Ebbeskotte adding 11. Nick Dunlap chipped in eight for Delphos Jefferson.
Arlington is at Arcadia in Blanchard Valley Conference action on Friday while Delphos Jefferson visits Allen East in Northwest Conference play.
