CONVOY - It didn't take long for the Lady Knights to seal a win on Saturday against Hicksville.
Using a suffocating defense that completely trumped the Lady Aces, Crestview held Hicksville to only three first half points on their way to securing an easy non-league victory, 53-20.
Crestview jumped out early on Hicksville in the first quarter, putting ten points on the scoreboard before the Lady Aces answered with a free throw by Megan Headley late in the stanza. Jo Thompson and Madison Preston combined for eight of those first ten Lady Knights' points.
Crestview led 15-1 after the first quarter of play.
In the second quarter, the Lady Knights extended that lead quickly to 17-1 on a bucket by Madison Etzler before Hicksville put in their first field goal of the game with just under six minutes remaining in the half.
Crestview held Hicksville scoreless the rest of the first half, and a three pointer by Jessica Gamble, combined with eight straight points by Preston to end the half, put Crestview up 28-3 as the teams headed into the break.
Thompson pushed the lead to 30-3 to open the third quarter, but Hicksville then found some semblance of an offense and scored five straight points on a three-pointer by Kacee Babinger and two free throws by Macy Weatherhead to bring the game to 30-8.
Weatherhead and Crestview's Jessica Burger would exchange threes before Crestview ended the third quarter on a 6-0 to drive the lead to 39-11.
Hicksville put together their highest scoring quarter of the game in the fourth quarter by scoring nine points, but led by five points from Burger, Crestview put up 14 points of their own to cruise to the 53-20 final.
After the contest, Crestview head coach Greg Rickard commented on his team's performance in the game, and also reflected on his team's progress on the season so far.
"The first quarter we came out and got up 10-0," said Rickard. "We then got a little flat offensively, but we still held them to only three points [in the first half], so our defensive intensity was still pretty good. Then in the third quarter - they scored three points in the first half and then they score five points in the first minute of the third quarter - I guess you aren't going to hold anyone to six points in a game. I was pleased with the effort, defensively especially, and I thought we did a good job with help defense and lob defense. We got a lot of work in on that today. So I was pleased with how we came and battled."
"I'm pleased with the balance of our offense," continued Rickard on his team's season progress. "I'm pleased with the whole defensive effort. We are getting better each game. From where we were at the beginning of the season to where we are at now, we have made leaps and bounds. We have made good strides towards we where we want to get to. We have some tough road games coming up, which I'm glad to see before tournament. We have Wayne Trace on the road and that will be a good test. We have Celina on the road and Columbus Grove on the road. So we have three of our last four games on the road. And the tournament games will be on the road in a hostile environment so it's good to have those games at the end of the year."
Preston led Crestview in scoring with 12 points, all of which came in the first half. Burger scored ten points for the Lady Knights, all of those points coming in the second half.
Weatherhead scored 10 of Hicksville's 20 points to lead the team.
Crestview is now 11-3 on the season, while Hicksville falls to 3-13.
Hicksville won the junior varsity game, 30-22.
