Crestview basketball stand out Melissa Eickholt took the time out of preparing for a trip to the state tournament on Wednesday to sign her letter of intent to attend Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
"I really liked the campus," said Eickholt, who was just named to the All-Ohio Second Team for Division IV this week. "I stayed overnight and the girl I stayed with was very nice. I am not sure what I want for a major but Mount Vernon as a lot of options, so that is a plus. I liked the coach and I wanted to find a place where I could fit in and I felt that was Mount Vernon."
Eickholt will be going from a high school program that has had a lot of success to a college program that is nationally known as well. Mount Vernon just won the National Christian College Athletic Association national title with its girls basketball program in 2009. But that team also graduated five players and that made getting freshmen who could contribute right away a must.
"Certainly we are very excited about her as a player," said Cougars coach Steve Gregory. "We were 27-9 this year and had a tremendous season. The only way to come back from that is to get good players. Melissa is one we targeted very early on last year. Knowing she is a very good softball player, too, and not knowing where she ultimately wanted to land and what sport she wanted to play, we feel very fortunate. We thought she would be a great fit for our team and our university."
