CELINA - Midway through the first quarter of Monday evening's Mercer County girls basketball showdown between Parkway and Celina the Panthers and Bulldogs found each other tied at 8-8. The stalemate did not last as Celina used a big first half to take a 62-43 victory.
"They (Celina) had a good run during the first and second quarter and we got barried pretty deep," Parkway coach Adrian Jazwiecki said. "It took us until the second half to start and chip away at that. Too little too late, but otherwise I think my girls had a pretty good effort."
Knotted at eight with just over four minutes to play, Celina (5-3) had equaled the scoring of Parkway's Hannah Harshman who had accounted for all of the Panthers' points. The Bulldogs eventually found ways to limit Harshman's touches as they ended the quarter on a 12-4 run. That momentum carried into the second quarter as the Bulldogs went wild, outscoring the Panthers (1-7) 21-8 to take a 41-20 lead into halftime.
"Parkway has some good athletes they came out and played hard right from the get-go and you have to give them a lot of credit for that," Celina coach Brian Stetler said. " ... It's good to see us finally get some shots down, I think once we started running the floor a little bit and pushing the ball a little bit that helped us get some shots underneath quickly.
We changed things up a little bit from what we have been doing. I think it was just a matter of trying to get some adjustments there at the beginning, trying to figure things out. It's good to see that they did that. We got it done."
The third quarter played out quietly with the two teams combining for just 19 points - a 12-7 Bulldog advantage - as Celina used its bench liberally. The same was true in the fourth quarter with Parkway winning that battle 16-9.
Harshman finished the night with 15 points while Tara Luth and Jamie Guggenbiller each added 11 for the Panthers. Harshman led Parkway with seven rebounds.
Kelsey Waterman led the scoring for the Bulldogs with 16 and recorded a double-double with her game-high 11 rebounds. Cenzie Yoder added 15 points and seven boards for the Celina.
Both teams struggled holding onto the ball as Celina turned it over 21 times and Parkway 23. The Dogs shot 43 percent from the field while Parkway made just 35 percent.
