KENTON - Kenton freshman Maty Mauk hit on 38 of 51 passes for 539 yards and six touchdowns Friday night. Those number were enough to give the Wildcats a 48-7 win against the Van Wert Cougars and a share of the Western Buckeye League championship. Kenton finishes the regular season at 7-3 overall and 7-2 in the WBL. Van Wert ends at 3-7 and 3-6. Kenton has a slim chance at a playoff berth, having entered Friday night's game computer ranked 10th in Division III, Region 10.
On every play Mauk was in the shotgun formation and was the only player in the Kenton backfield. He ran the ball occasionally, usually when flushed out of the backfield by the Cougar pass rush. While most of his throws were short, he also showed the ability to throw the bomb. His scoring throws went for 10, 41, 9, 32, 86 and 31 yards.
The margin was 20-0 at the half. Van Wert penetrated Kenton territory twice in the first 24 minutes, one time getting all the way to the Kenton 6 before turning it over on downs.
It was 42-0 at the third stop, and Van Wert quarterback Austin Fleming had just left the game with an injury. That forced senior Tim Hoverman back into his regular position, despite a painful toe injury. Hoverman promptly drove the Cougs 74 yards in 14 plays for their only score, that coming on a 19-yard pass to freshman tight end Austin Reichert. Reichert then booted the PAT.
Both coaches emptied the benches with five minutes to go, after which the Wildcats scored on an interception to provide the final margin.
The game marked the end of the high school football careers for ten Van Wert seniors - Hoverman, Craig Thomas, Nate Adams (out with a broken collar bone), Adam Stevens, Cole Blackmore, Ryan Wells, Austin McIntosh, Adam Custer, Chris Overmyer and Ron Cobb.
