DELPHOS - Delphos Police, in conjunction with the West Central Ohio Crime Task Force, conducted a roundup of 19 persons wanted for drug offenses that took place within the Delphos City Limits.

Chief Kyle J. Fittro announced Friday afternoon that by 9 p.m., all of the suspects had been apprehended. "We began the operation (Friday) morning at 8 a.m. with officers from nearly all of the departments assisting to arrest these individuals," Fittro stated.

"This is the largest, single-person one-day roundup that has occurred in the city of Delphos since 1980," Fittro declared. In addition to the 19 persons named, a 17-year-old male could face charges as well if prosecutors elect to do so.

In all, the 19 adult defendants will face 58 separate charges involving marijuana, heroin, cocaine, and ecstasy.

"People sometimes ask what we're doing about drugs. Well, sometimes we simply can't tell you what we're doing, and this is one of those instances where you can now look back and answer some of those questions," noted Allen County Prosecutor Juergen Waldick. "For the better part of a year, these operations have been ongoing. We try to do this in a coordinated effort, not just with different agencies, but different counties."

Fittro was quick to credit the many other agencies who, as part of the West Central Ohio Crime Task Force, participated in the drug sweep. Members of the force are the police departments in Delphos, Lima, Fort Shawnee, and Shawnee Township, sheriff's offices in Van Wert County, Paulding County, and Allen County, along with the Allen County Prosecutor's Office.

The investigation began almost a year ago, but Fittro pointed out that the roots of the problem date back even farther. He explained, "About two years ago, we started having complaints about heroin which we had not really experienced for many, many, many years. Certain things that I had never experienced ever as an officer, we had just never seen heroin... We decided that we needed to cultivate some informants for this particular area, and enlist the help of this task force and all these other agencies."

Fittro stated that although this roundup does not completely clear up drug problems in Delphos, it will have a significant effect for the immediate future.

Up next for the 19 defendants will be arraignment in Van Wert and Allen counties with some persons facing charges on both sides of the county line.

"The Delphos Police Department would like to thank all of the above mentioned agencies for their help and cooperation during this investigation," declared Fittro. "We could not be doing this today if it were not for all of there help. This is not a Delphos thing. This is a group effort that has taken nearly a year to put together, and all of these departments have contributed greatly."

I think its wonderful that they want to clear up the obvious drug problem in delphos, but I feel they should have put a little more effort into their search. My fiance got arrested yesterday because of all of this and he has been clean for 7 months now!! He went through detox at the hospital and he went through a program in Sidney for 6 months to help him stay clean. We are having a baby and he had a job. This was all old news. Why can't they just leave the past in the past, and arrest the people who A) actually sold drugs to begin with!! and B) are still selling drugs. There are quite a few people that should be on this list that aren't are probably still helping Delphos' little drug problem. Everybody knows that my fiance was in trouble just this past winter because it was plastered all over the news, but since then he has been clean and doing so much better... and he is going to be a father and because of this mess.. now I'm alone... and its all old flippin news
