A Dayton man was killed when his tractor-trailer rig went left of center, striking two other rigs.
Mack Clomton Dunson, 53, was pronounced dead at the scene by Van Wert County Coroner Dr. Scott Jarvis. A passenger in Dunson's vehicle, Brian T. Tolbert, 21, Dayton, was taken to Van Wert County Hospital with minor injuries.
Investigators from the Ohio State Highway Patrol are unsure as to why Dunson's truck veered over the center line of U.S. 127 in front of Hickory Sticks Golf Club at around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Dunson's 2007 GMC C-7500 Straight Truck first struck a 2008 Volvo Conventional Semi-tractor trailer driven by Steven G. Rusk, 40, South Vienna, Ohio. Rusk was not injured and damage to his rig was minor. That vehicle was able to be driven from the scene.
Next, Dunson's truck hit a 2005 Sterling Conventional semi-tractor with double trailer, driven by Steven A. Wilson, 57, Delphos. Wilson also was uninjured, although the second trailer had extensive damage to the left side and had to be towed from the scene. Dunson's truck was severely damaged and was also towed by Mace Auto Body.
U.S. 127 had to be closed to traffic into the evening hours on Wednesday due to the wide amount of debris scattered along the crash site.
The Patrol continues to investigate the accident. Others assisting at the scene were the Van Wert City Police, Ohio City Police, Ohio City Fire Department, Brickners Ambulance Service, County Coroner, Van Wert County Emergency Management, and Ohio Department of Transportation.
