As a part of National Health Center Week, the Ohio Association of Community Health Centers (OACHC) have announced its annual list of Community Health Center Heroes from around the state. Three individuals from Family Caring Clinic in Van Wert were named to that list.
Honored were Nancy Sink, FCC director/CEO, Dr. Tom Lautzenheiser, FCC physician, and Jean Bulau, FCC volunteer nurse.
When contacted, Sink was surprised to hear her own name among those honored, but was excited that both Balau and Lautzenheiser had been selected to the list.
"Jean Bulau, bless her heart, she's a volunteer. She doesn't get paid a dime," Sink exclaimed. "But she's here two afternoons a week, and she has really become a part of our family here. She does an excellent job of helping our providers and the other nurses."
Balau has been a part of Family Caring Clinic for almost a year. She began shortly after Lautzenheiser came on board at FCC last August.
"Dr. Tom has come into this clinic and added a lot. I have yet to hear a complaint about Dr. Tom. Everybody likes him very much," Sink shared. "And of course his nomination was because we are so proud of him for serving his country. We were delighted to be able to add a physician of his quality to our staff."
Lautzenheiser is currently deployed in the Middle East until sometime in November.
Sink made the transition to FCC when the clinic became a separate entity from Community Health Professionals two years ago. After serving both CHP and FCC, Sink began directing the clinic's efforts in establishing health care services in Van Wert.
"These exemplary individuals nominated by their peers demonstrate the excellence and quality of care provided at more than 150 health center sites throughout Ohio," stated OACHC President and CEO Shawn Frick. "Community health centers provide affordable health care service to all Ohioans and will undoubtedly play a large role as national health care reform becomes a reality."
Nominations to become a Health Center Hero are made by staff and patients. Comments explaining why the nominee should be considered for the award and how the nominees have demonstrated themselves as heroes for their local health care center are submitted to the OACHC.
