ALBION, Ind. (AP) — Authorities have ended their search for a man who tried to run over a state trooper in northeastern Indiana.

State Police Sgt. Ron Galaviz says the 4-hour search several agencies was called off Tuesday evening.

Galaviz says the trooper began following a battery suspect near Big Lake in Noble County, about 20 miles northwest of Fort Wayne. He says the suspect had driven onto a dead-end street and the trooper had exited his car when the suspect turned his car around and tried to run over the trooper, who fired on the man. The trooper wasn’t hit and police don’t believe the man was struck by gunfire.

The man fled on foot a short distance away.

Galaviz says a church daycare in the area was locked down for two hours.
