ROCKFORD – The Lincolnview Lady Lancers kicked off the Chatt Insurance Holiday Tournament at Parkway High School Thursday night, as they faced off against the Ridgemont Golden Gophers. The Gophers came up big in the fourth quarter to push past the Lancers 50-41.

Lincolnview looked sluggish out of the gate, and was outscored 2-to-1 in the opening quarter. Jen Jordan went coast-to-coast for Ridgemont after stealing a pass, and sent her team on a 6-0 run to start the game. The Lincolnview offense was responsible for four turnovers in the first five minutes of action, and helped Ridgemont jump out to an early lead. The Lancers finally got on the board halfway through the opening quarter, but the Gophers fired right back. Shauna Richardson drained a three, and Priscilla Howland hit a jump shot to make it 13-4 in favor of Ridgemont. Lincolnview began to pick up the pace late in the first with solid defense, and two nice shots from the baseline, but Howland nailed a jumper with :12 remaining to extend the Gopher lead to 16-8.

Despite the lackluster play in the first quarter, Lincolnview owned the second. The Lancers went on a 13-1 run early to experience their first lead of the game. Maddie Gorman hit a pair from behind the arc, and Alena Looser added one of her own to give the Lancers a 24-19 advantage with 3:30 remaining in the half. The lead was short lived though, as Ridgemont rallied late to tie the game at 26-26. Jordan hit a three to lock things up, but with a minute remaining Kayla Schimmoeller sunk a basket for the Lancers, and swung the lead back to Lincolnview. With time running out, Shaylee McGrath drained a three from long range to once again give the lead back to the Gophers 29-28 at halftime.

Ridgemont failed to show up in the third quarter and mustered only five points with two field goals. The Lancers accelerated defense combined with smart ball handling helped rally Lincolnview in the third. Schimmoeller sunk a pair of field goals, and Looser added a three pointer to give the Lancers a 37-34 lead going into the final quarter.

The wheels fell off the bus for Lincolnview in the fourth. The Lancer put up only four points with three coming off the hands of Looser from behind the arc. Schimmoeller went 1-for-2 from the line for the Lancers fourth, and final point of the quarter. While Lincolnview struggled to close out the game, Ridgemont was just getting warmed up. They were on fire from the free throw line, and went 8-for-9 to help solidify the win. The Gophers finished the game on a 6-0 run, and held on for a 50-41 victory.

Lancer head coach Dan Williamson acknowledged his teams slow start.

“Early on they beat us down the floor quite a bit. They hit some open threes that we didn’t close out properly, but we came alive in the second quarter. We were moving the ball and getting shots; 20 points in a quarter is nice to see,” Williamson said. “We had the lead going into the fourth quarter, and then we just struggled offensively. Defensively I thought we played well in the second half, but we just stalled out offensively in the fourth quarter.”
