Lady Raiders top Continental

HAVILAND – Wayne Trace opened the season with an easy three-set win over Continental in volleyball action at the ‘Palace’ on Thursday night. The Lady Raiders cruised to a 25-7, 25-12 and 25-21 victory over the visiting Pirates, never trailing in the first two games of the evening.
Wayne Trace scored 15 straight points in the opener, turning a 1-1 tie into a 16-1 lead. The Raiders never looked back from there, pushing the margin to as much as 23-5 late in the set before settling on the 25-7 win.
Haley Saylor, Mackenzie Swary, Erin Mohr, Blair Baumle, Sarah Young and Addison Baumle all had kills in the opener for the Lady Raiders.
The second set was very similar to the first one.
Wayne Trace got two Mohr kills and a pair of Danae Myers blocks to quickly open a 4-0 lead and led 9-2 after an Addison Baumle ace.
Continental got as close as 9-4 and 15-6 after two Ashley Kindilen slams but the Raiders responded.
Kills by Young and Saylor and a Young ace widened the advantage to 18-6, and Wayne Trace led 20-8 following a Myers kill.
The Lady Pirates did get within 23-12 following a Leah Baker kill, but the visitors would get no closer as the red-white-and-blue posted the 25-12 victory.
Set number three was much more back-and-forth. The game featured seven lead changes and a dozen ties before Wayne Trace eventually posted the victory. Continental led by as much as 16-12 and 17-13, but the Pirates weren’t able to hold on.
Kills by Baumle and Young along with a Myers block helped the Raiders tie the contest at 18-18. With the set tied at 19-19, consecutive slams from Amber Logan and Baker put Continental on top 21-19 for its final lead of the night.
Wayne Trace answered with six straight points, highlighted by a Saylor ace, a Mohr kill and a Myers block, to rally for a 25-21 victory.
Saylor led the Lady Raiders with 14 digs while Baumle added nine digs. Swary also was a perfect 22 of 22 serving and Myers chipped in six blocks. Mohr and Young picked up ten and five kills, respectively.
Baker had six kills to top Continental with Ashley Kindilen adding three kills and two blocks. Logan and Lindsay Kindilen also had slams for the Pirates, who fall to 0-2 on the season.
The Raider junior varsity also was victorious over the Pirates, recording a straight set 25-9, 25-12 victory.
Wayne Trace returns to action on Monday, hosting Liberty Center in non-league action.
