FORT JENNINGS — Lincolnview's girls basketball crew got out of the gate slowly versus Fort Jennings Monday night. That all changed in the second quarter.

The Lady Lancers outscored the Lady Musketeers 21-11 to take a 9-point lead at the half and held on for a 54-45 non-league triumph inside The Fort of Fort Jennings High School.

The Musketeers (5-15) led 12-10 at the start of the second stanza but the Lady Lancers (9-11) heated up in a hurry, with Olivia Gorman springing for 10 points in the period and leading an 8-of-17 shooting span. Jennings still led 21-16 on a 3-point play the old way by Kristen Luersman at 3:58 but a bomb by Alena Looser started a 9-0 spurt — with Gorman adding two more bombs. Luersman hit the 2nd-of-2 foul shots at 1:38 to break the spurt but the visitors added a 7-0 run — capped by a foul-line jumper by Maddie Gorman at 12 seconds — for the 31-22 edge by Lincolnview.

Fort Jennings wasn't done as they rallied in the third period by winning the first 4:19 11-1 (with Luersman scoring 7) to retake the advantage — briefly — on a baseline drive by Luersman at 3:41 but then they went scoreless the rest of the stanza. A drive by Kayla
Schimmoeller at 3:27 gave the leadership back to the Lancers — this time for good — and a foul-line jumper by Lana Carey (1:31) and another drive by Olivia Gorman at :08 put them up 38-33.

Maddie Gorman (4:22) and Schimmoeller (2:03) and Lana Carey (47.6 seconds) picked up their fourth fouls in the canto and Lana Carey (:47.6) her third.

Fort Jennings tried to take advantage of those foul woes in the fourth by getting to the line early and hitting six out of the eight times they were there but could only get as close as five — 40-35 on two foul shots by Lillian Wisner at 7:20. The Musketeers were then forced to foul as the Lancers ran more clock on their possessions and they
canned 8-of-12 charity stripers in the quarter to maintain a comfortable cushion.

The orange-and-black had the better of the first-period proceedings as three times, they held a lead of six — the last at 12-6 on a Madison Neidert basket. Lakin Brant knocked down a pair of field goals, the second on a drive at 2:19, to get the blue-and-gold within 12-10.

"We don't have a lot of depth at guard, so they are playing a lot of minutes. You can tell they get tired at the end of games and turnovers are a part of that when teams apply pressure," Jennings head coach Bill Calvelage explained. "When they got hot, we
missed some shots we need to hit to keep pace. You know you have to play hard and consistently for 32 minutes against Lincolnview every game you play them. We really wanted to feed the post tonight but we struggled with that; we were better getting the ball to Kristen — a forward — and she had a great game."

Lincolnview head coach Dan Williamson had to dig into his bench a bit deeper to endure this night.

"The second half, we got into foul trouble. We've been wanting to get Sierra (Adams) in for some varsity time this year but it hasn't worked out; she gave us a big lift tonight out of necessity," he added. "The second period was the key. Olivia shot well, especially then, as did Alena; that got us going on both ends of the floor. That quarter basically won the game for us after a slow start. We started out in our man-to-man defense but we weren't too effective in it tonight, so we switched to a 2-3 zone and we were much better playing that."

Jordan Decker's 16 points topped Lincolnview's 55-20 junior varsity win. Emilee Calvelage countered with 12 to pace the Lady Musketeers.

Lincolnview hosts Ada Thursday. Fort Jennings visits Jefferson next Monday.
