OTTOVILLE — Host Ottoville outscored visiting Wayne Trace 17-7 in the second quarter and the Big Green made that difference stand up in posting a 53-42 win over the Raiders in non-league girls basketball action Tuesday evening.

The Big Green also took advantage of the presence of 6-0 senior Bridget Landin, who led Ottoville with 15 points while picking up 4 rebounds and 3 steals as well as multiple blocked shots against a Raider squad that didn’t have anyone taller than 5-7 on the floor.

“We knew we had a size advantage,” said Ottoville head coach Dave Kleman. “At times, I thought we did a good job of being patient and getting the ball inside. Other times, we didn’t do a good job of that.”

Tied at 12-12 after one quarter, the Big Green opened the second quarter with 10 straight points to take control. A 3-pointer by Abi Hilvers ignited the run and was followed by a Kasey Knippen basket along with two Quinley Schlagbaum foul shots to make it 19-12 Big Green.

Knippen then hit a 3-pointer to put Ottoville on top 22-12 before Wayne Trace’s Claire Sinn scored to get the Raiders within 22-14 at the 5:24 mark of the quarter. After Gracie Gudakunst hit one of two foul shots for the Raiders, the Big Green added a Landin free throw and a Haley Hoersten basket for a 25-15 advantage. Ottoville widened the lead to 29-17 late in the first half on a Schlagbaum basket before Gudakunst scored to get Wayne Trace within 29-19 at the break.

“The second quarter was the difference,” said Raider head coach Bethany DeJarnett. “We didn’t take care of the ball as well and they made shots and we didn’t. I am proud of our girls efforts though and I think we learned some things about ourselves tonight.”

Wayne Trace made things interesting early in the third quarter, trimming the deficit to 32-25 after a Sadie Sinn basket at the 4:21 mark; however, Ottoville quickly answered with a basket by CJ Kemper and a 3-pointer from Hoersten to expand the margin back to 37-25.

“We knew they were quick and that we had to be smart with the basketball,” Kleman said. “They are a good basketball team and we knew we had to come out and play well if we wanted to win.”

A Miriam Sinn 3-pointer pulled Wayne Trace within 37-28, but baskets by Hoersten and Knippen put Ottoville on top 41-30 at the end of three quarters.

“We battled tonight,” DeJarnett said. “The girls battled to the end and that is all I can ask out of them. I was very pleased with our effort overall tonight.”

Following a 3-point play by Landin to put Ottoville on top 44-30, Wayne Trace made a run. A 3-pointer by Claire Sinn, two Brooke Sinn free throws and a Gudakunst basket quickly trimmed the deficit to 44-37 with 5:03 left in the contest. The Raiders cut into the deficit even further, getting a Brooke Sinn 3-pointer to bring Wayne Trace within 44-40 with 4:01 left in the contest.

Ottoville, though, responded with Landin hitting three of four free throws to push the margin back to 47-40 at the 2:32 mark of the game.

“It seemed like every time we would make a run, they would answer,” DeJarnett said. “But that is what good teams do.”

The Big Green cruised from there, picking up a basket and two free throws from Landin to ice the victory.

Claire Sinn topped Wayne Trace with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals while teammate and sister Brooke Sinn chipped in 13 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.

The Big Green returns to action on Thursday when they visit Arlington while Wayne Trace hosts Woodlan (IN) on Thursday.
