VAN WERT — It was a forgettable game for Van Wert softball coach Mike McClure on Tuesday evening at Julibee Park. Facing a Western Buckeye League foe in the Lady Bulldogs of Defiance, his Lady Cougars fell behind early and wound up on the wrong end of a 14-0 final in five innings.
Defiance got on the board early with a three-run first frame as Trista Guyton, Emily Turner and Nigua Rowe all scored runs in the top of the first.
The Lady Cougars got a one-out double from Miranda Stittsworth but Lady Bulldog pitcher Anna Riggenbach was able to get the next two Van Wert batters out.
In the third inning, Josee Hale singled and, later in the frame, Abbey Zedaker picked up an RBI double to bring the score to 4-0, Defiance.
Zedaker struck again in the top of the fourth with a two-run single and came around to score on a misplayed ball by the Van Wert outfield to make it 7-0.
The Lady Bulldogs were able to push across seven runs in the fifth, getting a two-run double from Zedaker and an RBI single from Laura Schrag to bring the score to 14-0 Defiance.
In the bottom of the fifth, Van Wert put two runners on with a walk by Emily Baer and a Kelsey Spridgeon single. After that, Riggenbach was able to finish the game with a pop out to the catcher and inducing a fielder choice to end the game.
“We played bad; errors, swung at bad pitches. Can’t have that, not when you play another WBL team,” McClure said after te game. “They don’t know it’s a game, so it may come down to pressing. We just have to come out and play. On Friday night, we came out and played Celina and won the game. And we get down by a couple runs and we get all tense. We haven’t learned to just come out and play the game. It’s just a game and they need to play like it’s just a game.”
The Lady Bulldogs improve to 13-8 on the year and 6-3 in the WBL. The Lady Cougars drop to 11-8 on the season and 2-6 in the WBL.
