CELINA — Van Wert’s girls tennis team opened its season at Celina on Tuesday, taking on a Western Buckeye League rival. Ali Moreland, a district qualifier a season ago, got the Lady Cougars off to a strong start, defeating her first doubles opponent, Maddie Cline, by a 6-2, 6-0 final. Beyond that, however, it was all Lady Dogs, as Celina won each of the remaining two singles matches as well as botn doubles contests, each of them in straight sets.
Celina’s Ally Harris defeated Van Wert junior Katie Trttschuh 6-0, 6-2 and Bulldog sophomore Breanne Jenkins knocked off Cougar junior Kali Agler 7-5, 6-1. In doubles action, the Celina squad of Nicole Elston and Cami Mohler took out a pair of Van Wert seniors, Hannah Stemen and Sydney Felger, 6-3, 6-2 while Kayleah Fischer and Miranda Rable defeated Jess Agler and Phoebe Eutsler 6-2, 6-3.
The Lady Cougars return to the courts on Tuesday, August 19 when they travel to Lima Central Catholic at 4:30 p.m.
