ROCKFORD – The Parkway Lady Panthers played the Grove City Christian Eagles Thursday night in Rockford for the second game of the Chatt Insurance Holiday Tournament. The Panthers walked away with an easy victory over the Eagles 57-26.

Grove City came out strong in the first quarter. Savannah Carter hit a three to give the Eagles a 6-2 lead with 5:30 remaining in the young contest. Parkway quickly re-grouped with help from Haley Hawk. She finished with a team high 22 points, and hit back-to-back layups to tie things up at six. Sydney Crouch got in on the action, and scored four quick points for the Panthers along with two trips to the line. Her tough play under the net helped Parkway surge to a 17-9 advantage. Sophia Miller drained a three with only seconds to play in the quarter, and stretched the Parkway lead to 20-9, but Dalina Phomphengchane sunk a half-court shot with the buzzer sounding to cut the Panther lead to 20-12 after one.

Things didn’t get much better for Grove City in the second quarter. Parkway started out on an 8-0 run before a three by the Eagles put an end to the onslaught. The Panthers continued to ravage the Eagles in what turned out to be a one-sided contest. Parkway spread the ball around, and gave equal scoring opportunities to all their players as the Panthers pulled away. Claire Eichler finished off the impressive first half with a bucket as well as a trip to the line. She capitalized on the three-point play, and Parkway headed into the locker room with a sizable 32-17 lead.

Parkway was clearly in the driver’s seat for the second half as they allowed only nine points. Grove City’s offense was non-existent in the third quarter, and Jessalyn Hoyt was the only Eagle to sink a bucket. The Panthers used a powerhouse combination of Sydney Crouch and Haley Hawk to continue their dominance. The two accounted for ten of Parkway’s thirteen points in the quarter. The Panthers held a controlling 45-19 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

Parkway seemed to get better as the game wore on, and the fourth belonged to the Panthers. They spread the ball around, and played solid defense late in the game to help secure the win. The Eagles hit back-to-back shots, but it did little to slow down the near flawless performance by the Panthers. Parkway stalled late in the fourth, and ran out the clock to give them a 57-26 win over Grove City.

Parkway head coach Linda Hawk was pleased with her team’s performance. “I thought the girls did real well tonight. We have to pick up the intensity on defense a little, but I thought our shot selection was much better tonight. We were able to feed Haley (Hawk) down low, and they didn’t have anyone to stop her. I think offensively we did really well.”
