Four Cougars to play in VWCH all-star game

VAN WERT — The 15th annual Van Wert County All-Star Football Game, hosted by the Van Wert Booster Club will be held Friday, June 13 at Eggress Stadium in downtown Van Wert.
A team of 33 players representing the Western Buckeye League will take on 33 players from the Lima area and Northwest Conference schools. All tickets for the game are sold at the gate at a cost of $5 each. Gates will open at 6:30 p.m. with pre-game introductions to begin at 7:20 and kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
Four out-going Cougar seniors will suit up for one final game at Eggress, as Michael Smelser, Terrance Branson, Daniel Patterson and Jacob Braun will play for the WBL squad, joining conference standouts Will Batt (Defiance), Zach Schmerge (Wapak), Colin Gossard (Bath) and Justin Sawmiller (Kenton) among many others.
The Lima/NWC all-stars will be coached by Crestview’s Jared Owens and feature Dylan Henry, Scott Miller and Zen Burdette from Crestview. Wayne Trace’s record-setting duo of quarterback Colby Speice and wideout Korbin Showalter will join the Knight trio, as will 2013 NWC Player of the Year Zavier Buzard of Delphos Jefferson.
Other Wildcats suiting up include offensive lineman Issac Illig and returner Tyler Mox. Wayne Trace’s Jared Sherry will also play.
The rest of the Lima/NWC squad features four players from Ada, including quarterback Matthew Wilcox, Allen East running back Ross Stewart, and Lima Senior quarterback Justice Graham. In addition to Lima Senior, which sends three total players, non-NWC schools represented in the game include Perry (one), Delphos St. John’s (three), Antwerp (one) and Lima Central Catholic (two).
