CELINA —The Van Wert ACME team put its perfect record on the line in a doubleheader Saturday at Celina, but the Bulldogs swept the pair of games, 5-4 and 6-2.
Game one started with a big first inning from the Cougars. Ryan Stoller walked and Brant Henry singled to kick off a Cougar rally, and Ethan Williams and Josh Braun each singled to drove home a run before Gavin Cross knocked both Williams and Braun with a 2-run single to bring the score to 4-0, Van Wert.
The Bulldogs got three runs back in the bottom of the third, using three 1-out walks.
In the top of the fifth frame, Justin Keeling and Jimmie Luebke singled to start the inning. The Cougars then lifted starting pitcher Stoller in favor of right hander Caleb Fetzer. Fetzer retired the first batter he faced, but Celina’s CJ Kimmel laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to tie the game.

In the bottom of the seventh frame, Celina loaded the bases with two walks and an error, but the Cougars got a ground ball to Williams at third, who gunned down a runner at home. With two outs and a full count on Jake Smalley, the Celina batter took ball four to bring home the game winning run.
In game two, the Bulldogs got single runs in the first and second to take an early lead.
The top fourth started with a Fetzer lead-off hit for Van Wert. After Braun and Ryan McCracken worked walks to load the bases, Bryan Mills picked up an RBI when he was hit by the pitch, forcing Fetzer home and cutting the Bulldog lead to 2-1.
Celina got that run back in the bottom fourth with a single from Isiah Eichler, who later scored on a fly ball from Luebke to make it 3-1.
In the sixth, Gavin Gardner singled and Cross doubled him home to pull the Cougars back to within one.
Celina broke things open in the sixth, as Jacob Homan cleared the bags with a 3-run triple that set the final margin.
“I think we hit the ball fairly well; we were patient at the plate. We worked the count fairly well,” said Dunlap. “I didn’t like our fielding today, we had way too many errors, but (our kids) played hard today.”
The Cougars dropped both games of the double header to make their record 2-2 and Celina improves to 5-2 on the season.
