DELPHOS - The Delphos St. John’s basketball team used a huge second half to roll to a 50-34 victory over the Parkway Panthers. The Blue Jays outscored Parkway 29-to 16 in the final two quarters.
Coach Aaron Elwer was happy with his team’s performance in the second half. “For most of our games this season, the third quarter has been our downfall. We came out and the ball started falling in the rim and our confidence grew on both sides of the ball.”
St. John’s honored six Seniors before the game including: Eric Clark, Ben Wrasman, Aaron Hellman, Ryan Koester, Nick Bockey, and Jake Csukker.
Fittingly enough, Ryan Koester scored the first points of the game with a triple from the corner. Eric Clark followed his senior team mate grabbing a loose ball after a Panther turnover and his lay in put the Jays up by five.
The first quarter was back and forth as Andy Grothouse and Alex Odenweller both hit threes. Parkway countered with triples from Tanner Bates and a pair by Austin Adams to knot the score at 11 when the first quarter buzzer sounded.
Parkway took their only lead of the game when Dakota Shaffner hit a jumper from the baseline to put the Panthers in front by two. St. John’s tied the game on a put back by Tyler Conley after an offensive rebound.
Ryan Koester scored after driving the Vatican baseline for the bucket and the Jays never looked back and took a 21-18 lead into the locker room.
The third stanza scoring was highlighted by Grothouse and Odenweller draining three’s and St. John’s led 40-21.
With the Blue Jays safely in control of the game, Aaron Elwer worked all six of his seniors on the floor in the closing minutes of the game for their final curtain call. The game ended when senior Nick Bockey took the ball from the top of the key and drove down the lane to put the closing exclamation mark on a final victory at home.
St. John’s had two players score 13 points each: Ryan Koester and Alex Odenweller. Andy Grothouse and Tyler Conley each added eight.
Austin Adams lead the Panthers with 11 points.
The Jays end the regular season with a 12-8 record to head into sectionals. The next game for St. John’s will be next Friday against the winner of the Lincolnview/Ottoville game.
