Richard Earl (Dick) Guthrie

Richard Earl (Dick) Guthrie passed away Tuesday morning, January 21, 2014, in Van Wert, Ohio.

Dick was born January 11, 1937, in Washington, PA. A standout wrestler and football player at Trinity High School, he attended Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, on a football scholarship. After college he joined the staff at Peters Township High School, where he taught for eighteen years. After leaving teaching, he started ServiceMaster Cleaning Services by Guthrie, which grew into a thriving business.

Since 1964, Dick was a devoted member of the Upper St. Clair Alliance Church, where at various times he sang in the choir, led the Monday night prayer meeting, taught Sunday School, and served as Properties Manager. He was Head Elder and, at the time of his death, Elder Emeritus. Dick was active in the Rotary Club and for a time was President of the Peters Township Chamber of Commerce. He volunteered for many years at the Washington City Mission, where he also served a term as Chairman of the Board.

Dick is survived by his wife, Mary Johns-Guthrie, of Van Wert, Ohio, who brought so much joy to his last months. He was loved and will be missed by his two children, Mrs. Shari (Walter) McRae of Richmond, VA and Dr. Steven (Julie) Guthrie of Nashville, TN. His loss is also felt deeply by his sisters, Joyce Guthrie and Crystal Guthrie; by his seven grandchildren: Ben (Courtney) McRae, Erin (Jose) Nogueira, Jacob (Samantha) McRae, and Joel, Noah, Sophie and Lucy Guthrie, and one great-grandchild, Chloe Jayne McRae. Dick was predeceased in 2011 by his beloved wife of 52 years, Sally Guthrie. He also was predeceased by one grandson, Samuel Lewis Guthrie. He was cherished by his many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Above all Dick was profoundly devoted to his Lord, Jesus Christ, in whose presence he now finds rest and healing.
