LEIPSIC, Ohio — Gene Stanley Basinger, 72, of Leipsic, died on Jan. 20, 2014, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.

He was born Sept. 7, 1941, in McComb, Ohio, to the late Ralph and Elsie Marriott Basinger.

He was a 1960 graduate of Leipsic High School and went on to be employed at Robert Ruhe Air Dusting & Spraying in Leipsic for many years. He was a member of the Reformed Mennonite Church, Bluffton, Ohio. Gene had a brief stay at Hilty Memorial Home, Pandora, Ohio, where he met a special roommate and friend, Maynard Badertscher.

In Gene’s spare time, he enjoyed fishing, flower gardening, asparagus and mushroom hunting, and spending time with family.

Survivors include two sisters: Bonnie (Dwight) Schroeder of Ottawa, Susie (Gary) Closson of Ada; one brother: John (Connie) Basinger of Van Wert; a sister-in-law: Sharon Basinger-Peterson of Leipsic; 32 nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews.

Gene was also preceded in death by a brother, Barry Basinger and a sister, Rita Fey.

Funeral services will be held at Reformed Mennonite Church, Bluffton, at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2014. James Basinger and Mark Bankert will officiate. Burial will immediately follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Chiles-Laman Funeral and Cremation Services, Bluffton.
