SPENCERVILLE, Ohio — Carl I. Smith, 84, formerly of Spencerville and
Russells Point, died at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014, in his
residence in Bonita Springs, Florida, with his family at his side.
He was born Oct. 20, 1929, in Mercer County, the son of Ernest and Anna Brown Smith, who are deceased.
July 28, 1950, he married Janette Taylor, who survives in Florida,
along with two sons: Michael C. Smith of Venedocia, Ohio, and David T.
Smith of Ft. Myers, Florida; two grandchildren: Alex Smith and Taylor
Anna Smith; three brothers-in-law: Ralph Taylor of Lakeland, Florida,
Robert (Carol) Taylor of Van Wert, Ohio, and Marvin (Nancy) Taylor of
Lima, Ohio, and a sister-in-law: Marcia Hartman of Indianapolis,
His sister, Betty AcAfee, preceded him in death.
Carl was a
1947 graduate of Celina High School and then served in the U.S. Navy on a
minesweeper following WW II. He owned and operated the Elgin Grain
Company with his family for 35 years. He was a member of the Ohio Grain
and Seed Dealers Association, he was a charter member of the Venedocia
Lions Club, a member of the Mendon Masonic Lodge, a member of the
Community Congregational Church at Russells Point, and was a trustee of
the Van Wert Hospital. He was a licensed pilot using the Van Wert
Airport and enjoyed scuba diving and fishing.
service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014, in the Thomas E.
Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville, Pastor Jim Ellington officiating.
Burial will be at a later date in the Venedocia Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 until 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
