VAN WERT, Ohio — Jerry F. Spoon, 86, of Van Wert, died at 12:10 p.m.
Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014, at CHP Inpatient Hospice Center, Van Wert.
He was born July 27, 1928, in Kirby, Ohio, to the late Marie Elizabeth (Kuntz) and Raymond W. Spoon.
wife, Helen Maxine (Bolinger), preceded him in death on Dec. 4, 2012.
They were married Dec. 27, 1946, at First United Methodist Church in Van
Survivors include a daughter: Linda D. (Wayne) Knodel Taylor of Van
Wert, three grandchildren: Ryan (Julie) Knodel of Lima, Heidi (Rich)
Arney of Van Wert, and Justin “J.J.” Knodel of Asheville, North
Carolina, and two great-grandchildren: Alexa Knodel and Alaina Arney.
was preceded in death by four brothers: Robert J., Raymond V., Carl R.
and David R. Spoon, a half-brother: Arthur Albert, and a sister:
Jerry co-owned with his brother-in-law, Kenneth Bolinger, the Bon-Ton in
Van Wert, then owned and operated with his wife the Goodyear Shoe Store
in St. Marys until retiring in 1995 and moving back to Van Wert.
He was a member of St. Marks Lutheran in Van Wert and formerly of Zion
Lutheran Church of St. Marys, Ohio, and the American Legion Post 178 of
Van Wert. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps.
will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at St. Marks
Lutheran Church, Van Wert. The Rev. Will Haggis of St. Marks Lutheran
Church. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert. Military rites at
cemetery will be conducted by the combined honor guard of the American
Legion and V.F.W. Posts of Van Wert. Calling hours are 4 - 8 p.m. Friday
at Cowan & Son Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Saturday
at the church.
Preferred memorial is St. Marks Lutheran Church or Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center.
