VAN WERT – The only expression that Van Wert High School’s Desteni Contreraz could think of to describe her recent bull ride was, “a big rush.”

Friends and an innate desire within finally took the local 16-year-old to the Mack Arena, located outside of Celina, two weeks ago for her first encounter with an ambitious bull. Contreraz managed to hang on for five seconds before giving in to the bull’s attempts to eject her into a painless landing.

“This is something I never thought I would get to do but I’ve wanted to do it for a long time,” said Contreraz. “I finally found some trainers that were willing to help me. This was my first attempt. It was confusing, but it went pretty well.”

“This was considered a practice round. I was surprised at how many others were there doing the same thing and the crowd of people that were there,” continued Contreraz. “A lot of our family and friends were there. You don’t compete. People are there to help you. You just get on and ride.”

Contreraz said that bulls are provided, and everything is set up for the ride.

“I guess you might say that this is something that was on my bucket list,” said the local girl. “It’s always been something that I’ve wanted to do. Once you find a trainer to help you, you’re all set.”

“I loved it. As soon as I got on the bull I thought, ‘this is something I want to do,’” continued Contreraz. “I’m ready to do it again. It is like a big rush, but it all happens so quick.”

Contreraz said that her mother was all for it, but her dad was a little leery to start with. Once he saw how much she enjoyed it, he threw his support behind her.

“I wanted to do this while I was young just to entertain myself,” observed Contreraz. “I enjoyed it a lot. I want to keep practicing. Having my family there to support me made me want to work harder to stay on the bull.

“One thing I can say is that I never really was afraid,” continued Contreraz. “I was ready to go. I wasn’t afraid to start with it. Nothing about it scared me. I’m ready to go again; it was really a great feeling.”
