Van Wert man stopped for OVI, drug possession, trafficking

VAN WERT — A traffic stop by Van Wert Police turned into a much more serious event Saturday night.
At 6:18 p.m. an officer pulled over a driver for traveling left of center in the 100 block of E. Main St. After making contact, the officer began investigating the driver on suspicion of driving while under the influence.
The driver, Matthew A. Southerland, 31, Van Wert was soon arrested after a search of the vehicle revealed several prescription medications. One of those medications was a schedule IV drug, Diazepam, commonly known as Valium. In all, more than 1,000 doses of the drug were seized as evidence and sent to the Ohio Bureau of Investigation for analysis.
Southerland is facing charges of OVI, fifth-degree felony drug trafficking and fourth-degree felony drug possession.
