DELPHOS -- A telephone scam has been reported around Van Wert, Allen, and Putnam counties.
According to Delphos Police, contact is being made with area residents from someone claiming to be with American Electric Power (AEP). The caller tells the resident he or she is late or behind on electric payments and have one hour to make a payment or their power will be shut off. Authorities are reminding residents not to give credit card or bank account information to these individuals. This is a known scam.
On it's website, AEP is advising customers, "Before you pay, call AEP Ohio's Customer Operations Center at 1-800-672-2231 to see if you have a payment due and to check the status of your account. You also can check the balance of your account at AEPOhio.com."
