VAN WERT — The YMCA of Van Wert County’s Summer Camp schedule is out and all ages 6-12 may register. While your kids enjoy a great summer full of fun and activities you can enjoy the tax benefit of a child care expense. There is a great list of weekly activities planned, including:

WEEK 1: June 9 - 13 FLOAT MY BOAT

This kid favorite is a sampler of local on-the-water activities. Kids love being able to experience the different boats, and will come home with a solid foundation of boating skills and a new found passion for boating. These skills will be used on their outdoor adventure to the Auglaize River!

WEEK 2: June 16 - 20 GAMER CAMP

This popular and interactive gaming camp will get the heart jumping as they compete in tournaments, dance-offs and share their expertise with 8 different gaming systems available. The camp then moves to the water and outdoors each day as they enjoy some fun in the sun!

WEEK 3: June 23 - 27 BUILD ME UP

This camp is full of team building activities and initiative games designed to help groups develop confidence & leadership skills. During this camp you ascend the 35 foot climbing wall and conquer the zip line!

WEEK 4: July 7 - 11 THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Ready to embark on an adventure in the great outdoors? Spend the week in nature exploring the art of hunting, fishing, archery and identification of animal and plant life right here in Camp Clay’s backyard.

WEEK 5: July 14 -18 SURVIVOR CAMP

Be a survivor! This camp introduces the campers to basic camping skills while connecting kids with the wonder of the world around them. We do this through stories, hands-on skills like fire-making, compass reading, shelter building, and hikes. These skills will be used to build their own onsite primitive camp site!

WEEK 6: July 21 - 25 WATER WORKS 1

Jump into camp with a Splash! Each day the campers will be splashing the day away while visiting local pools and water parks! This camp is designed for the campers to make great childhood memories while enjoying the summer air.

WEEK 7: July 28 - August 1 BARNYARD ANIMAL CAMP

This week the campers will have a WILD time as they visit local farms hosting a variety of animals with the week ending with a trip to the Ft. Wayne Zoo!

WEEK 8: August 4 - 8 ACTIVE X SPORTS CAMP

Sports Galore! This camp is all about the skills– The Main Stage features a visit to the Fort Wayne Tin Caps Stadium & Mad Ants Field house!

WEEK 9: August 11 -15 WATER WORKS 2

This camp is so popular we revisit our favorite watering holes for some more fun in the sun with trips to our local pools & water parks.

WEEK 10: August 18 - 22 SPACE CAMP

3-2-1 Blast off! This camp features a sleep over at Camp Clay with a visit to the Neil Armstrong Museum where all will explore the stars and outer space.

Each camp runs Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with pick up and drop off at Camp Clay. The weekly rates are $70 for Van Wert Y members and $110 for potential (non) Y members. Did you know The American Camp Association, which accredits more than 2400 camps nationwide, reports the weekly cost of day camp averaged about $300 while an overnight camp averaged about $690?

“Our camps provide a safe, affordable and fun day camp for elementary school kids that offer a host of activities to entice everyone’s interest, in an atmosphere that reinforces the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.” Clint Myers, Camp Clay facilitator stated.

Myers also commented on a new program called the Counselor in Training (CIT) program. “This program is for teens ages 13-17 that would like to shadow our Day Camp leaders to develop and practice leadership skills through hands-on interaction with younger children and develop professional reference for college or the job market. This program is $115 for the entire summer with the option to do as much or as little as you would like.”

Information about this and other programs available at the Y can be found by calling (419) 238-0443, visiting the Y’s new website at www.vwymca.org – where you can also download the brochure for a complete list of camps and field trips, as well as the registration form; or emailing Mitch Price, program director, at mitch@vwymca.org.
