VAN WERT — Another building change at the Van Wert County Fair was announced on Monday. The Gospel Pavilion will be taken down and replaced for this year’s fair, with a tent covering the current stage area.

The pavilion, which has been located just north of the Administration Building, was damaged by heavy winds earlier this year. Inspections by the jdi group found that the pavilion was unsafe for occupancy and the structure wrapped with fencing to keep people out. An insurance claim was filed and the carrier suggested that the cost of repair would equal or be greater than the cost of building an entirely new Gospel Pavilion.

So last week, the fair board and those involved with the Gospel Pavilion met to discuss the possibilities. It was noted that a planned new convenience store and truck stop across S. Washington St. would create more noise that could disturb concerts if it was replaced at the current location, making rebuilding the pavilion in another location on the Fairgrounds a possibility. With preparation time before this year’s fair running short, it was decided to use a tent at the present stage location. Any concerts or events held at the Gospel Tent in will again be free with paid fair admission. There are southern gospel quartets concerts scheduled Thursday, Friday and Monday of Fair Week and Contemporary Christian artists set for Saturday and Sunday evenings.

The future site and shape of a new Gospel Pavilion is still in the discussion stage. Ideas and any input for the new building are being taken. Early discussion has suggested better acoustics and the ability friendly and usable year-round to use year-round. Also ideas for increased capacity and a larger stager were put forward, not to mention any possible location change. A suggestion box will be stationed at the Gospel Tent during this year’s fair.
