VAN WERT — Area sixth graders working on their Genius Project for Mr. Moody’s class at Van Wert Middle School met with Sandy Lane, director of the American Red Cross of Van Wert County, and asked if they could do fundraisers and donate it to the American Red Cross. These young people ran their own fundraisers such as bake sales, Rock-A-Thon at the Black Swamp Bistro, and shoveling snow to raise $283.

Mark Klausing, American Red Cross of Van Wert County disaster chairman, was contacted to meet the students and receive the donation. Mark states “When I received the call, I was amazed by what I was hearing. When I met with the children, I expressed to them how proud I was of them – thinking of others before themselves. Once I explained what the money would be used for, I could see smiles appear on their faces, knowing what they did would help others in need.”

In addition to supporting our own community, the disaster team provided mutual aid to Cloverdale during the tornado, Ottawa during the flooding, and Paulding County to help with fires. This donation will help us to continue to help others in their time of need. We appreciate what these young men have done for us and the community.
