VAN WERT — Think summer and you think of chicken barbecued on the grill to perfection. Carrying on with a long time tradition, the annual 4-H Chicken Barbecue will serve from 3:30-7 p.m. June 10. Again this year, there will be drive thru or carry out options. Cars should enter the fairgrounds at Fox Road and drive to the Commercial Building (new fairgrounds location with faster service). Drive on in and pick up your food at the door, without even getting out of the car.

Tickets are $8 for a full meal which includes half a barbecued chicken, green beans, roll and cookie prepared by Chik-N House LLC. Members of all 4-H clubs in the county will work to pack up meals, help those dining in and collect tickets in the drive thru.

A barbecue poster contest was held for all county 4-H clubs with many of the posters to appear in local stores and windows. Winners were first place, Katelyn Welch of the Bunny Hoppers; second place, Austin Sheets of the Udder Dairy; third place, Melissa Hauter of the Willshire Wide Awake; and honorable mention, Kirsten Stemen of the Ridge Buckeyes. Winning posters are displayed at the OSU Extension office and others submitted are hung up around town.

The 4-H Chicken Barbecue is a longtime event in Van Wert County. It is one of the few fundraisers put on by the county 4-H Council. The funds from this event are used to support 4-H endeavors such as 4-H Camp, camp scholarships, awards and to support 4-H members at the Jr. Fair.
