WREN — The little village of Wren in southwestern Van Wert County will see its population swell this weekend. The same phenomenon occurs each year those who have moved away come home for Wren Homecoming, and people from all around gather for the annual Wiffleball Tournament.

This year’s tourney will mark the 23rd event which will begin with the Junior Wiffleball Tournament Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. back at the Wren Ballpark. The junior tourney will be played Wednesday and Thursday nights at the ballpark and the championship game moves to the big field at Wrenway Park Saturday at 5:10 p.m.

Festivities for the big tourney begin Friday at 5:30 p.m. with the Opening Ceremonies. At 6 p.m., D.D. Strickler throws out the first pitch before the action between the Jagerbombers and MKS Siding begins.

Other matchups on Friday night will be Shananigans taking of Whiffers, Moews Seeds challenged Olympic Lanes and the Lee Kinstle Bunnies will play the Ball Busters. Games continue throughout the weekend, taking short breaks Friday at 9:40 p.m. and Saturday at 8:15 p.m. for the Wiffleball Skills Challenge.

The tourney’s Championship Game will be played at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, and 15 minutes prior to the start, the pre-game activities with all the pageantry and tradition only found in Wren will be held.

The Food Stand starts serving Thursday at 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Hours on Saturday will be 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. on Saturday with timeout during the parade.

The Beverage Garden will run 5-11 p.m. downtown on Friday and Saturday until midnight. Friday night, the Wren Princess Pageant will be held at 6 p.m. The Cruise-In at the Ballpark will run from 4-9 p.m. The evening will wrap up with music from 100 Proof from 10-11 p.m.

A big Saturday schedule begins with the traditional Pancake and Sausage Breakfast at the Fire Station from 6-10 a.m. Also in the morning, the Rib Cook-Off will be held at Wrenway Park from 8 a.m. to noon, with winners announced at noon. The kids games and dunk tank will open from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Basket Bingo registration Saturday begins at 11:15 a.m. with games starting at noon. At 2 p.m., lineup and judging for the parade will begin. The parade will step off beginning at 4 p.m.

The Wren Homecoming Queen Contest and prize drawing will be held Saturday at 6:30, followed by the Wren Ballpark Association Awards at the pavilion.

The Opening Round wiffleball games on Saturday pit Greve Chysler and Putman Stables; Slusher’s Jewelery vs. Sons of Pitches; Shotzy’s takes on the Eager Beavers; and Honey Badgers will play Bill Miller Auto Sales.
