VAN WERT – The sixth year of the Read One Program wrapped up at the end of October and the totals are in.

This year, the Read One Program had the most books submitted in its six-year history with a total of 2,431 titles submitted.

“This year, I reached out to teachers and administration at area schools, and I am very pleased with the response I got from them,” said Times Bulletin Editor Kirsten Barnhart. “It’s great to see each school participate and encourage literacy. I’m also very thankful of the partnership with the Brumback Library, which also helps drive those totals up.”

This year, a big player in the Read One totals was Crestview Elementary who contributed 1,980 titles to the total books read in October.

Other big contributors to this year’s Read One Program was Nancy Brown’s Creative Writing Class at Van Wert High School, Trinda Keber’s Book Club students at Van Wert Middle School, Sandra Dowdy’s seventh grade class at Lincolnview Local Schools, Natoshia Wilhelm’s English class at Van Wert High School, and those who submitted titles via the Brumback Library, through email, and through drop offs at The Times Bulletin building.

This year the most popular authors were Stephen King and James Patterson. The most popular titles were the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” books, the “Lord of the Rings” books, and “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.”

The Times Bulletin began the Read One Program in Van Wert in 2011 as a way of promoting October as National Book Month and to encourage literacy in the area.

The Brumback Library helps locally by publishing lists of the top read books in several categories before October begins, as well as allowing readers to register their titles at the main branch.

In 2011, area residents turned in a total of 49 book titles read during the event. That number jumped to 114 in 2012 and 130 separate titles in 2013. In 2014 those numbers leaped to 652 total books and 516 various titles. In 2015 the Read One Program topped those totals with 702 books read of 546 different titles. Then in 2016 those totals dropped with 121 books read.

This year, as stated above, 2,431 titles were submitted.
