Melrose teen killed in snowy-road accident

VAN WERT — A 17-year-old Melrose man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a two-car crash on St. Rd. 637 near Elm Sugar Rd. in Van Wert County.
Robert A. Seffernick lost control of his 2002 Chrysler Sebring at 2:55 p.m.on the snow-covered road, slid left of center, and was struck by a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by David Simko, 64, Toledo. The Jeep overturned and both vehicles came to rest off the west side of the roadway.
Seffernick was pronounced dead of his injuries at the scene by Van Wert County Coroner Scott Jarvis.
Simko was extricated from his vehicle and was taken by Samaritan LifeFlight helicopter to Parkview North Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts, and the front and side air bags deployed in Simko’s Jeep.
Assisting at the scene were the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office, Grover Hill Volunteer Fire and EMS, Brickner EMS, Parkview Samaritan, Delpha Chevy Towing, and Straightline Auto Body.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. An investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol is continuing.
