VAN WERT -- July 4 will mark another Holiday at Home celebration in Van Wert. From morning to evening, the day is planned out to give local residents plenty to do to commemorate America's birthday as well as to kick off a great holiday weekend.
Activities begin as early as 7 a.m. with the VFW Pancake and Sausage Breakfast at VFW Post 5803. Serving will run from 7-11 a.m. at 111 N. Shannon St. The 21st annual Firecracker Bike Tour begins at 7:30 a.m., giving bicyclists the opportunity to experience Van Wert County from the farmland of rolling hills to the former home of the Great Black Swamp, participants can choose from a route of 18, 32, or 62 miles which have been mapped out to follow. the tour is organized by the Van Wert County Historical Society.
At 11 a.m. the annual July 4 Patriotic Parade will step off from the YWCA of Van Wert County, marching along down Main Street with plenty of patriotic music, flags, and local celebrities.
Holiday at the Museum will run from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Historical Museum, 602 N. Washington St. There are always plenty of things to see and do on the museum grounds. This year's big addition is the historic tourist cabin which was moved from Lincoln Highway and Mendon Rd. to its new location at the museum. See what spending the night was like while roadtripping down the Lincoln Highway. A ribbon cutting for the cabin will be held at 1:30 p.m. Just after the ribbon cutting, a time capsule will be opened. This capsule was buried in front of the Van Wert Municipal Building in the mid 1980s with instructions to be opened after 25 years. It has actually been about 27 years since it was buried, so come out to the museum grounds to see a bit of history opened up.
The annual Van Wert Firefighters Chicken BBQ dinner starts service at 4 p.m. Stop out at Smiley Park and pick up a quick chicken picnic dinner prepared by the firefighters.
What's a holiday without music? At 7 p.m. there will be music! The Lima Symphony Pops Orchestra will perform in Fountain park downtown beginning at 7 p.m., and there will be plenty of patriotic offerings during the free program.
Cap off the holiday celebration with the Independence Day Fireworks Display beginning around 10 p.m. The firework will be shot off from the Van Wert County Regional Airport at 1400 Leeson Ave., but there are plenty of good vantage points around town where you can celebrate the Fourth with a bang.
The Holiday at Home Committee would like to thank all the individuals and businesses for their help and financial assistance in sponsoring the fireworks display, and to all those who participate in the fun of Holiday at Home.
